Need

The ambition is to create a town that gains a world-class reputation for satisfying the aspirations of residents, businesses and visitors alike in a way that is appropriate to its standing as an international tourist destination with a cultural and historic legacy that is, indeed, unparalleled.

Stratford has been identified by Advantage West Midlands, the regional development agency, as “The Jewel in the Crown”. But it is a jewel that in recent years has become in need of some energetic polishing.

AWM has recognised Stratford’s vital contribution to the regional economy and decided that it as worthy of investment as the more traditional recipients of its financial support.

The ambitious £100 million redevelopment of the Royal

Shakespeares Birthplace
Shakespeare Theatre on the banks of the River Avon in Stratford was partly responsible for igniting this interest. The other trigger was the joint plan by Stratford District Council and Warwickshire County Council to develop the waterfront area adjacent to the theatre - the scheme known as the Waterfront Masterplan. AWM suggested there should be a Masterplan for the whole of Stratford and - combined with ideas already in circulation such as the 2020 Vision for Stratford - World Class Stratford was born.
